Puka Puka Luau Succulent Chicken vs Born Carnivore Chicken and Egg Dry
The clearest demonstration of why labels mislead: two foods from the same brand, one five times more diluted by water than the other.
Nutrition, both ways
Left pair of columns is what each package prints. Right pair removes the water from both. The last column is the difference that survives the conversion.
| Nutrient | A: as fed | B: as fed | A: dry matter | B: dry matter | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Crude protein ranking reverses | 16% | 40% | 80% | 44.4% | 35.6 pp |
| Crude fat | 2% | 20% | 10% | 22.2% | 12.2 pp |
| Crude fiber | 0.5% | 3% | 2.5% | 3.3% | 0.8 pp |
| Moisture | 80% | 10% | -- | -- | 70.0 pp |
Multipliers: Puka Puka Luau Succulent Chicken x5.0, Born Carnivore Chicken and Egg Dry x1.1.
What the numbers actually show
80% moisture against 10% means the printed numbers are describing different things entirely - one includes several times more water than the other.
This is a case where the raw labels point one way and the dry-matter figures point the other: Puka Puka Luau Succulent Chicken reads 16% protein on the package versus Born Carnivore Chicken and Egg Dry at 40%, but once water is removed the positions reverse (80% against 44.4%).
Reading the two packages side by side without this conversion would have given the wrong answer on at least one nutrient.
