Ingredient A-Z

Named and unnamed animal fats

fat sourcealso called: chicken fat, beef fat, poultry fat, animal fat

What it is

Rendered fat used to raise energy density and supply the fatty acids cats cannot make themselves. Named fats specify the source species.

Why it gets discussed

A named fat is treated as a transparency marker and an unnamed one as an opacity marker. Since fat is the most concentrated energy source in the food, the distinction carries more weight than its label position suggests.

Where it sits on the label

Usually within the first six ingredients in dry food.

Foods in our database that do not list it

"Do not list" means the ingredient does not appear on the label text we transcribed for that product. It is not a certification, and recipes change - always confirm on the current packaging.
